Look beyond the departure time
Check the conditions expected along your route and around your return time. Consider exposed roads, descents and stops, not just the temperature outside your door.
Plan where each layer goes
Lay out your clothing and decide how you will carry anything you remove. Check pocket space after packing food, a phone and repair supplies. Keep frequently used items accessible.
Check fit on the bike
Try your kit in your normal riding position. Check access to zips and pockets and look for restrictions or uncomfortable seams. Test new clothing on a familiar ride before an important event.
Create your own reference
After the ride, note what you wore, the conditions and what you would change. Over time, your own examples become a more useful packing guide than a single temperature rule.
